Money Chair 2019

In my work, I seek to bridge the East and the West. My sculpture, “Money Chair”, is a response to a 19th century Chinese Garden chair. In East Asian culture, it is common to convey theme through symbol. The excisions in the chair resemble those in Chinese coins, symbolizing wealth. I wanted to create something part sculptural and part functional, that combined Chinese iconography with Western directness. The Western audience may not know the meaning of the symbols carved into the chair, but it is no coincidence the sculpture is green, the western symbol for wealth.
